Leventhal worked on Dr. King's staff for three years and served as a consultant for Mrs. Coretta Scott King and the MLK, Jr. Federal Holiday Commission. He has been honored by the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame for his role as the first white player - shortstop and leadoff hitter -- on the Macon Bombers (which made the Bombers the first integrated semi-pro baseball team in Georgia) while he was working in Dr. King's SCOPE voter registration project in 1965. Many of his teammates and opponents had played in the Negro Leagues and minor leagues.
