(In this study William Lyons presents a sustained and cohe...)
In this study William Lyons presents a sustained and coherent theory of the emotions, and one which draws extensively on the work of psychologists and physiologists in the area. Dr Lyons starts by giving a thorough and critical survey of other principal theories, before setting out his own 'causal-evaluative' account. In addition to giving an analysis of the nature of emotion - in which, Dr Lyon argues, evaluative attitudes play a crucial part - his theory throws light on the motivating role of emotions in our lives, our attitudes towards our emotions and our responsibility for them.

(William Lyons presents an original thesis on introspectio...)
William Lyons presents an original thesis on introspection as self-interpretation in terms of a culturally influenced model. His work rests on a lucid, careful, and critical examination of the transformations that have occurred over the past century in the concepts and models of introspection in philosophy and psychology. He reviews the history of introspection in the work of Wundt, Boring, and William James, and reactions to it by behaviorists Watson, Lashley, Ryle, and Skinner.

This edition presents a selection of formative responses to the "Problem of Mind," written in a century in which the subject has undergone more theoretical changes and, arguably, made more genuine progress, than it had during the entire two millennia that preceded it.

(Strepsiades lives in Greece. He has debt. A lot of debt. ...)
Strepsiades lives in Greece. He has debt. A lot of debt. And that’s because his son, Phiddy, has a penchant for betting and isn’t so keen on working. At a loss, Streps has an idea: Phiddy can go to Socrates' Academy and learn how to talk himself out of trouble! Job done! What could possibly go wrong? Socrates and His Clouds, inspired by Aristophanes' Clouds and Plato's Dialogues, is a serio-comic drama about the fragility of morality, the hazards of education and the burdens of being a teacher. (Difficult to know and impossible to forget, Ludwig Wittge...)
Difficult to know and impossible to forget, Ludwig Wittgenstein is remembered as the greatest philosopher of the twentieth century. He published only one book in his lifetime - a masterpiece that moulded the evolution of philosophy and baffled his teachers. Spanning most of his life, from his early encounters with Bertrand Russell in Cambridge to a final trip to New York via the Russian Front, Wittgenstein: The Crooked Roads tracks the journeys of a tortured soul.

From 1973 to 1985 William E. Lyons was a lecturer in philosophy at the University of Glasgow. From 1985 to 1995 he worked as the head of the School of Mental and Moral Science at Trinity College Dublin. In 1985 he was appointed a professor of moral philosophy there, serving until 2004.
He has published several books, including Gilbert Ryle: An Introduction to His Philosophy (1980), Emotion (1980), The Disappearance of Introspection (1986), Approaches to Intentionality (1995). His research is in the areas of the philosophy of the mind and philosophical psychology.
In Emotion Lyons discusses four different theories on emotions: feeling, behaviorist, psychoanalytic, and cognitive. The book champions a version of the cognitive theory called the "casual-evaluative theory of the emotions." Approaches to Intentionality is a textbook for the upper-level undergraduate in which Lyons discusses different theories of intentionality and also explains his own "bottom-up developmental" theory. Intentionality is the relationship between the mind and what it is thinking about. In Matters of the Mind Lyons explains the evolution of the theories on the philosophy of the mind and the influences on such theorizing from psychology, neuroscience, and computing.
Lyons also has an interest in "Theatre of Thought" drama. His play about Wittgenstein, The Crooked Roads of Genius won the START Chapbooks play competition in 2005 and his play about Heidegger and Arendt, The Fir Tree and the Ivy, won the Eamon Keane Full-Length Play award in 2006. He also has written an Aristophanic play about Socrates, entitled Socrates and His Clouds.
