(About the Book: Flashpoint China depicts tensions in the ...)
About the Book: Flashpoint China depicts tensions in the Taiwan Strait when an unprecedented alignment of presidential selections in Taiwan, China, and the United States destabilizes international relations in 2012. The charismatic president of Taiwan mobilizes widespread support among Taiwanese for a new constitution declaring full independence from mainland China. The new president of China, selected in a bitter struggle with his rival, remains determined to maintain China's claim on Taiwan amidst enormous internal cross-pressures. In the U.S., the first black female ever to occupy the Oval Office faces reelection in a close race against a rival who fans anti-Chinese sentiment while the president adheres to the longstanding policy of dual deterrence. While the American president strives to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait, her counterpart in Beijing begins a blockade to choke Taiwan economically. A crisis breaks out when a Chinese cruiser torpedoes a U.S. destroyer. The U.S. Navy retaliates, and the situation quickly escalates as the region heads for all out war. About the Author: Dr. William E. Cooper serves as Distinguished University Professor and President Emeritus at the University of Richmond. He has authored several books and articles in cognitive science, higher education, and international relations.

( Syntax and Speech is the first extensive examination o...)
Syntax and Speech is the first extensive examination of the relation between sentence structure and the organization of speech. Combining the methods of cognitive psychology, linguistics, and acoustics, the Coopers show that a surprising amount of syntactic information is conveyed by the subtle ways a speaker times the delivery of a sentence. Syntax and Speech provides abundant experimental evidence that the syntactic boundaries of surface phrase structure have strong effects on the timing of the speech signal. The Coopers develop a detailed theory of structural representation to account for the location of pauses and elongated speech sounds. This work bears importantly both upon psychological theories of speech production and linguistic theories of sentence structure. Moreover, their methods of examining speech provide an admirable model of how complex human behavior can be successfully analyzed. The results, which can be applied to language pathology and communications engineering and have clear parallels in other expressive behaviors such as American Sign Language, music, and animal communication, provide the starting point for many new lines of research in cognitive science.

(The scientific study of speech production has been undert...)
The scientific study of speech production has been undertaken within a variety of disciplines, including linguistics, physiology, physical acoustics, and psychology, among others. In recent years, it has become possible to combine the knowledge accumulated within these separate disciplines to gain more insight into the nature of this complex human activity. Here, we apply an interdisciplinary focus to one of the most widely discussed and poorly under stood aspects of the speech signal. This study of fundamental voice frequency involves a mixture of linguistics, physical acoustics, and psychology. The rele vant aspects of each discipline are introduced in Chapter 1 so that readers with minimal background in at least one of these areas should be able to compre hend much of the whole. This book is written primarily as an original research treatise rather than as a review of the literature. However, many previous studies of fundamental fre quencyare discussed here, and the book should serve as both a reference source and a supplementary text in courses on speech communication taught within a number of disciplines. Because of the complexity of Fo patterns, graphical displays of the results playa particularly important role in this presentation. While the results of each experiment are summarized and discussed verbally within the text, the graphical displays, by comparison, represent a more inte gral part of this book than is often the case in treatments of speech production.
