Founded chair, and was professor missions and comparative religions, Ohio Wesleyan University, 1895-1900. Assistant secretary Missionary Society of Mechanical Engineers Church, 1900-1904. Missionary bishop Mechanical Engineering Church for Southern Asia, 1904-1912.

Correspondent secretary Board of Foreign Missions Methodist Episcopal Church, 1912-1916. Elected bishop Methodist Episcopal Church, May 20, 1916. Lecturer, Nathan Grades Foundation, Syracuse University, 1913.
