Served in the ranks of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, 1892. Entered the 4th Devon Regiment January 1899 as 2nd Lieutenant. Served Ashantee, 1900.
Seconded from the Militia, 1899, to the Sierra Leone Frontier Police, and served with them as Assistant Inspector. On the Ashantee rising breaking out was given command of the Sierra Leone Frontier Police detachment sent down, and did most of scouting through the campaign. Wounded twice (despatches twice, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, medal with two clasps).
Promoted Inspector in Sierra Leone Frontier Police for services. Captain, 1901.
Seconded to South African Constabulary, 1901. Inspector-General of Police and Prisons in Uganda, 1906. Erick Savery, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order; 4th Battalion Devonshire Regiment.
