Several children. Successful sugar refiner, 1828-1842. Mayor New York City, (Democrat) 1845-1846, 1849-1850. President Bank of North America and New York Savings Bank from 1850’s to 1861.

Mayor New York City, 1873-1874, on reform platform after “Tweed Diary” disclosures, term was stormy, warned about his conduct by New York Governor John A. Dix, but no corruption charges brought against him or proved.
