Lieutenant-Colonel, 1901. Colonel, 1904; served with 1st Battalion Royal West Kent in Nile Expedition, 1884-1885 (medal and clasp and Khedive’s star). Malakand and Buner campaigns, 1897-1898 (wounded, despatches, medal and clasp).
In 2nd Battalion Royal West Kent in South Africa, 2. Commanded a mobile column from April 1901 to end of hostilities (despatches twice, brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel, and Companion of the Bath. Queen’s medal, three clasps, and King’s medal, two clasps). General Staff Officer.
