Interne University of Virginia Hospital, 1908-1909. Member house staff, Bellevue Hospital, New York, 1909-1910. Recalled to University of Virginia as house surgeon of hospital, 1910, later professor clinical surgery and gynecology.

Commissioned major Medical Corps, United States of America, September 6, 1917.

Lieutenant colonel, June 27, 1918. Honorary discharged, April 23, 1919.

Was organizer and chief of surgical service, Base Hospital 41, American Expeditionary Force, at Saint Denis, France. Citation by General John Jay Pershing, April 19, 1919.
