(Excerpt from German Socialism Ferdinand Lassalle: A Biogr...)
Excerpt from German Socialism Ferdinand Lassalle: A Biographical History of German Socialistic Movements During This Century In the election to the German Reichstag which took place early last year, nearly eight hundred thousand votes were cast for Socialist candidates, and the Social-Democratic party claimed, not without reason, that altogether nearly a million Socialists took part in the election. That is a stupendous fact. What is its significance? At the time of the election the number of men qualified, by the completion of the twenty-fifth year, to vote was estimated at nine and three quarter millions. Thus one in ten could be regarded as a Socialist. It is, however, a well-known fact that a large proportion of the Socialist army is made up of young artisans, operatives, and labourers from the age of eighteen upward, so that the figures given by means represent the full strength of the party in Germany. These are facts which will bear a good deal of careful pondering. Let us think of Socialism as we will, it is not to be pooh-poohed out of existence. Here it is, a great power in our civilisation, a momentous factor in national life. It can hardly be called an idle task to trace the growth of this vast social force in Germany, for not only may Germany be regarded as the classic land of modern Socialism, but other countries, both Continental and Transatlantic, are fed with Socialistic doctrines from this copious fountain. Further, England bears a certain amount of responsibility for the German Socialist movement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. (Excerpt from Matthew Arnold: And His Relation to the Thou...)
Excerpt from Matthew Arnold: And His Relation to the Thought of Our Time, an Appreciation and a Criticism There is to-day a cult of Matthew Arnold; it is 1 growing; it must grow. It will grow because many tendencies of the age are in its favour; still more because many influences are opposed to it, and because the healthiest instincts of human nature and the deepest interests of civilisation require that it shall combat these opposing influences, and overcome them. To show what this cult is and why it must prevail is the purpose of this book. Briefly, the cult of Matthew Arnold is the cult of idealism, using the word not, of course, in its philosophical meaning, but as indicating the pursuit of perfection as the worthiest working principle of life, in this sense every poet is an idealist SQy-to,-every-political theorist, every worker in the sphere of social reformation; much more, then, the man who combines with poetic insight the trained judgment of the thinker and the practical sense of the world of affairs. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II (1848-1851) THE FRANKFORT NATIONAL ASSEMBLY While the King of Prussia had been making one new Germany in Berlin, another was being made at Frankfort. As at the beginning of the century and again in 1880, so now the cause of national unity was intimately bound up with the endeavour of the constitutional party to place the government of the country upon a broader basis. It is an altogether inadequate view that the only motive behind the democratic movements which turned Germany upside-down in 1848 was to increase the power of the people at the expense of the prerogatives of the Sovereigns and their Governments. A genuine and strong desire for closer union existed at that time, and if it was, allied with demands for"constitutional reform, and on the part of the extreme democrats for a radical change in the form of government itself, these demands derived much of their force and justification from the fact that it was the Sovereigns who, fori their own purposes, were keeping Germany disunited. To the ardent reformers of those days, Liberalism and na-1 tional unity were merely two aspects of the same questions Without a representative parliament emanating from the free choice of free peoples, and frankly expressing the principle of popular sovereignty, unity had for them neither attraction nor meaning. Herein lay a fundamental difference of principle which hopelessly divided the Sovereigns from the great body of the nation. Many of them were still openly hostile to all constitutional innovations, and chafed sorely under the new restrictions upon their power; such rulers were in no mind to see themselves bound by the fresh restraints which might be expected from the creation of a central parliament. From the belief, common to thepopular parties, that unity ...
