Varney, William Henry was born on April 19, 1838 in Wolfsborough, New Hampshire, United States. Son of Henry Weed and Ruth Basset (Buffum) Varney.

Education

Educated Boston public schools. Studied naval architecture, and was designer of merchant vessels.

Career

Appointed assistant naval constructor United States Navy, July 29, 1869. Promoted naval constructor, March 12, 1875. Retired April 19, 1900.
