Attorney general of Ohio, 1865-1869. Justice Supreme Court, 1871-1873. Member Constitutional Convention, 1873.

Republican nominee for government, 1877. Delegate Republican National convs., 1860, 84. Placed James G. Blaine in nomination for Presidency, 1884.

Declined appointment as consul at Rio de Janeiro, 1869. Lost sight while justice Supreme Ct.
