Began practice of law at Portsmouth, Virginia, 1868. Commonwealth’s attorney for Norfolk County, 1869. Removed to Norfolk, 1870.
Elected commonwealth’s attorney for Norfolk City, 1871. United States district attorney Eastern District of Virginia in President Cleveland’s 2d term. President Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad Company, and Washington Southern Railway Company, January 1, since 1907.
