Studied at King’s College London.
Entered Indian Army, 1841. Joined the Sind Irregular Horse, 1846. Served throughout 2nd Punjab War, 1848-1849.
Present at siege ofMooltan, battle of Goojerat, surrender of Sikh army, and occupation of Peshawur. Employed on special duty under His (or Her) Majesty Foreign Office from the opening of Russo-Turkish War to the close of Crimean as a Colonel in the Turkish Army. Present at Kars previous to siege, and in campaign on the Danube.
Embarked with British Army at Vania, and was present at siege of Sevastopol as assistant engineer. Severely wounded (despatches). Present at battles of Balaclava and Inkerman and bombardment of Sveaborg iu Baltic.
Adjutant- General of Turkish Irregular Cavalry (BashiBazouks) in Asia Minor and Bulgaria until close of war, when ordered to return direct to India on special duty. Present during Persian War, as Assistant Adjutant-General Cavalry Division, 1856. Indian Mutiny, 1857 - 58.
Political Agent in Baloochistan, 1859. Conducted expedition of tribes of Khan of Khelat against the Murree tribe, and recovered British guns captured in 1839,1859. Acted as chief Commissioner in Sind.
Was Political Superintendent and Commandant on North-west Frontier of Sind, 1860-1868. Punjab, Crimean, Danube, gold medal, Turkish, and Persian. Honourable Aide-de-camp to Viceroy of India.
Frequently thanked by Government of India. Retired on full pay, 1874. Cartulary-register 1866; D.L.
