Served as reporter, city and managing editor and associate editor on the Courier, Clipper-Herald, and Journal, Hannibal. Admitted to bar, 1882. City attorney, Hannibal, 1882-1884.
Moved to Indiana, 1884, and was general attorney Louisville, New Albany & Chicago Railroad Moved to Chattanooga, 1887, and lived in Tennessee until 1895.
Democratic presidential elector, 1892.
Practiced in New York, since 1895. Practiced in federal and state courts Affiliated with Tammany Hall, 1895-1897.
But left it because of “Crokerism,” and opposed its city tickets, 1897, 1902.
Voted Democratic ticket in National and state elections. Supported Seth Low for mayor, 1902, and helped organize Greater New York Democracy, becoming chairman of the executive committee.
Appointed senior commissioner of accounts, New New York Resigned to support McClellan for Mayor, and Croker having been forced out as leader of Tammany, again became connected with the Democratic organization of New New York
Supported Civic Alliance (Fusion ticket) in campaign of 1909.
