Practised medicine for thirteen years at Worcester, Massachusetts. Illinois-health caused retirement from practice. Has since travelled extensively by bicycle and in other ways in out-of-the-way parts of Europe, North Africa, and Asia, including Greece, Spain, Sicily, Morocco, Algeria, Tunis, Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Palestine, India, Ceylon, Java, Burma, and Cambodia.
During summers 1898-1899 travelled nearly 2000 miles among higher Himalayas.
In latter summer made three pioneer ascents in Karakoram Mountains of snow-peaks, of 18,000, 19,450, and 21,000 feet. During the summer of 1902 explored the great Chogo Lungma Glacier in Northern Baltistan.
In 1903, during a third expedition to Baltistan, explored the Alchori, Hoh Lumba, and Sos Bon glaciers to their sources. Explored the Bolucho glacier, a branch of the Chogo Lungma.
Ascended three snow peaks at altitudes of 21,500, 22,508, and 23,394 foot
In summer of 1906 explored the Nun Kun range of mountains in Suru, Kashmir, ascending to altitude of 22,720 feet. In 1908 explored Hispar glacier and branches and descended Biafo glacier. Awarded by Society de Topograph ie de France, for topographical research in Himalaya, prize medal offered by the French Minister of Commerce.
