Gilmore, Rees & Carlson, Professional Corporation was established by three former partners in the Trusts and Estates Department of the Boston law firm of Hale and Dorr. Daniel J. Gilmore and William J. Rees founded the firm (then known as Gilmore & Rees) in 1988 and in 1989 Christopher T. Carlson resigned his partnership at Hale and Dorr to join the firm.
In 1992, Bruce J. Bettigole, formerly chairman of the financial planning department of Adler Pollock & Sheehan, Incorporated. in Providence, Rhode Island, joined the firm as partner.
Michael P. Doherty and Craig A. Ciechanowski were named partners in 1996.
