He studied chemistry under his brother, Edward Livingston Youmans, and at Columbia and Yale, and studied natural history with Asa Fitch. He then took a course in medicine at New York University, and in 1865 studied natural history under biologist Thomas Henry Huxley in London.
Began practice of medicine, Winona, Minnesota. Edited Thomas Huxley’s The Elements of Physiology and Hygiene: A Textbook for Educational Institutions, 1868. Editor (with brother) Popular Science Monthly, New York City, circa, 1872, sole editor, 1887-1890.
Contributor to Popular Science Monthly, Appleton’s Annual Cyclopedia.
He was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences.
Married Celia Greene, August 2, 1866, 4 children.
