(Today the problem of the relation of the Christian Church...)
Today the problem of the relation of the Christian Church to the world stands front and center on the stage of world mission. As never before, the call goes out to the Church to help people all over the world lead a truly human life as the children of God. The Church's ministry in the world must therefore include ministry to human economic needs. In this nationalistic age, moreover, each new church must find its own particular economic structure, not adopt one that is dictated by the tradition of other countries. Western mission leaders and laity who demand that churches in the Third World follow the Western Churches' collection-plate economy may be unaware of the rich diversity of practice in their own history represented by such missionary pioneers as the Moravians and the Basel Mission Trading Company. Danker's informative book is a study of those two groups, concentrating particularly on the economic structures they created to support their mission work.

William John Danker was born on June 19, 1914 in Willow Creek, Minnesota, United States. He was a son of William Frederick Julius and Wilhelmine Agnes Danker. He had two siblings.
In 1937 William John Danker graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. He held a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wheaton College, a Master of Arts degree from the University of Chicago, and a Doctor of Theology degree from the University of Heidelberg.
After ordination, William John Danker pastored at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Harvard, Illinois (1937 – 1942), and Trinity Lutheran Church, West Chicago, Illinois (1942 – 1948). From 1948 to 1955, he served as the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod’s first missionary to Japan.
When he returned in 1956, he became a professor of missiology at his alma mater, Concordia Seminary. His tenure there was cut short in 1973 when he was part of a group of 50 faculty members who were forced out of their posts by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, which took issue with the school's teaching of a more liberal interpretation of the Bible.
In 1983 Danker began teaching at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, where he and his wife founded the Center for World Christian Interaction. He authored a number of books including Two Worlds or None, Profit for the Lord: Economic Activities in Moravian Missions and the Basel Mission Trading Company, and The Future of the Christian World Mission.
