GOODWIN, William L. was born on April 30, 1856 in Baie Verte, New Brunswick. Son of Edward Chappell Goodwin (descended from a Massachusetts family of that name, members of which came to New Brunswick with Monckton’s army, 1754), and Margaret Carey, g.-daughter of John Carey, an officer in a Highland regiment.
Studied at Mount Allison Academy and University, Sackville, New Brunswick. Edinburgh University. Heidelberg; London. Canadian Gilchrist Scholar, 1877-1880.
