Began as pharmacist, Dallas, North Carolina, 1879. Mayor of Dallas, 1884. Ordained ministry Methodist Episcopal Church, South, 1890.

Pastor successively Morganton, Connelly Springs, Elkin, Hickory, Lenoir, Mocksville, Asheboro, Murphy, Pineville, Leaksville, until 1924. Associate editor North Carolina Christian Advocate, 1906-1911. Secretary Western North Carolina Conference Methodist Episcopal Church, South, 1894-1938.

Secretary-treasurer Board of Education, same conference, 1925-1929. Member General Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, South, 1910, General Board Church Extension, 1910-1914.
