Educated under mother and Professor G. T. Abernathy, Montgomery County, Tennessee. Studied law, Vanderbilt University, 1 year, later in office of Colonel Thomas C. Morris, of Charlotte, Tennessee.
Admitted to Tennessee bar, 1892, and began practice at Charlotte. Member 50th General Assembly of Tennessee, 1897-1898. Elected judge Circuit Court, 9th Judicial District of Tennessee, for unexpired term, 1908, reelected, 1910, 1918.
Resigned April 15, 1923, to fill vacancy on Supreme Court of Tennessee, by appointment of Governor Peay. Elected to same office for 3 terms, 1926-1942.
