William Mason Wright, American army officer.


Wright, William Mason was born on September 24, 1863 in Newark, New Jersey, United States. Son of Edward H. and Dora M. Wright.


Cadet United States Military Academy, July 1, 1882-January 11, 1883. Graduate Infantry and Cavalry School, 1891.


Commissioned Second lieutenant, 2d Infantry, January 19, 1885. First lieutenant 5th Infantry, December 17, 1891. Translations to 2d Infantry, February 9, 1892.

Captain a.a.g. vols., May 20, 1898. Honorary discharged vols., May 12, 1899. Captain United States Army, March 2, 1899.

Promoted through grades to brigadier general May 15, 1917. Major general N.A., August 5, 1917. Major general regular army, March 7, 1921.

Participated in Santiago Campaign, 1898, later in subduing Philippine Insurrection. Duty General Staff, 1905-1908. With General Funston, at Vera Cruz, 1914.

Appointed commander 35th Division, September 1917. Commanded 35th Division with British, May 1-June 6, 1918, 3d, 5th and 7th corps American Expeditionary Force, in the Vosges, 89th Division during the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives, and 1st Corps, November 12, 1918-March 22, 1919. Deputy chief of staff, United States Army, January 1920-July 1921.

Commanding 9th Corps Area, July 1921. Commanding Philippine Department, February-September 1922. Retired December 31, 1922.

Awards: Distinguished Service Medal, Knight Commander St. Michael and St. George, Commander Legion Honor, Grand Officier Order Leopold, Order Rising Sun, Croix de Guerre with Palm.
