Grinnell, William Morton was born on February 28, 1857 in New York, United States. Son of William F. and Mary (Morton) Grinnell.


Educated Anthon’s and Mohegan Lake schools, Harvard University, Stuttgart (Germany), University of France, graduate Bachelier-ès-lettres and Bachelier-en-droit. Graduate Columbia College Law School, Bachelor of Laws, 1881.


Practiced law in Paris, France, as counsel to the United States Legation, 1881-1886. In New York, 1886-1892. 3d assistant secretary of state of the United States, 1892-1893.

Partner in banking house of Morton, Bliss & Company, 1893-1900, when firm became a trust company under name of Morton Trust Company, resumed practice of law, acting as attorney for the company, the Mount Morris Bank, etc., and still engaged in practice of law. Major United States.V., in Spanish-American War, on staff General Poland, 1st div., 2d army corporations Chevalier de la Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur’Honneur, France, 1890. Director Illinois Central Railroad Company, Rio Grande & Sierra Madre Railroad Company, Loup Creek Coal Company, Mount Morris Bank.
