During boyhood worked on farm, at sawmills and cattle ranches during spring, summer and autumn months, attending country schools. Taught in log houses, during winter. Attended academic 16 weeks, winter of 1881-1882.
Went to mining camps, chopped cordwood, drove team, worked in smelters, quartz mills and mines. Began to read law in Monroe, Utah, 1882. Admitted to bar, September 22, 1887.
Appointed assistant United States district attorney, 1889.
Elected company attorney Sevier Company, Utah, 1892, reëlected 1894. On admission to statehood, 1895, elected district judge 6th Judicial District, reëlected 1900.
Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Utah, since 1902(chief justice 1907, 1908, 1913-1914). Present term expiring 1920.
Married Lavinia L. Murray, October 7, 1893.
