Appointed surgeon United States Navy, 1809, served in hospitals in Philadelphia, Norfolk, Pensacola. Professor botany University of Pennsylvania (though still on Navy active list), 1815-1818. Charges brought by fellow Navy surgeons that he had criticized marine hospitals unjustifiably were dismissed, 1818.
