Resigned and returned to Dahlonega. Member and speaker pro tern Georgia legislature during reconstruction period. Twice arrested as ineligible and tried by military courts, which acquitted him.
Member Congress, 1871-1874. President of the board of trustees North Georgia Agricultural College, 34 years. Mayor of Dahlonega for 6 years (1901).
