Background
DICKEN, William Popham was born on March 19, 1834. Son of late Stephens Dicken, Doctor of Medicine, Deputy InspectorGeneral of Hospitals, Bengal, and Catharine Lamb, youngest daughter of Captain Joseph Lamb Pophain, Royal Navy, and niece of Admiral Sir Home Popham.
Education
Studied at Blundell’s School, Tiverton. Charterhouse; Addiscombe.
Career
Entered Madras Army, 1853. Captain, 1865; Major Madras Staff Corps (now Indian Army), 1873. Lieutenant-Colonel 1879.
Brevet Colonel 1883.
Colonel commandant 3rd Madras Light Infantry, now 63rd Palamcottah Light Infantry, 18S4. Served Burmese Expedition in command of Toungoo and Ningyan (Pyinmana) column, 1885-1887 (despatches" twice, medal). Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1887.
