Career

Read law in office Oliver P. Morton, Centerville, Indiana. Admitted to bar, 1860. Private secretary Governor O. P. Morton, 1861.

Purchased Indianapolis Journal, 1864, and was several years its editor. State printer, 1861-1863. Postmaster Indianapolis, 1869-1881.

Private secretary Mayor C. S. Denny, 1894-1895. Started Indianapolis Times, 1880, conducted it until 1886. United States Consul-General at St. Petersburg Russia, 1897-1904, Halifax, Nova Scoti, 1904-1907.
