Admitted to Missouri bar, 1887, and began practice with judge A. H. Waller, as Waller & Clay, Moberly, Missouri. Private secretary to the United States Senator James B. Beck, 1887-1890. Settled in Lexington, 1890, and formed partnership with Judge M. C. Alford (later lieutenant governor of Kentucky).
