Went to Sutter’s Mill (California) 1849, became dealer in cattle and real estate. Established merchandise firm William T. Coleman & Company, San Francisco, 1850. Member Executive Committee San Francisco Committee of Vigilance, 1851, also member Committee of Thirteen.
Established branch of firm, in New York City, 1852-1855.
Returned to San Francisco, 1856, decided that conditions warranted revival of Committee of Vigilance, president Executive Committee hanged 4 criminals and chased many others out of city. Organized Committee of Safety to preserve order during anti-Chinese riots of 1877.
His business failed, 1886.
