Public school education. Entered a newspaper office at 15. Studied engraving in Philadelphia and art in Pennsylvania Academy Fine Arts.
Went to New York, 1878, and later to Paris.
Studied under Jean Paul Laurens. Opened studio, New York, 1880.
Has since been actively engaged as illustrator for Harper’s and other standard periodicals.
In 1882 engaged by publications of Picturesque Canada to travel with Marquis of Lorne through West and Northwest Canada and illustrate the work. Later made several sketching tours in the United States and in 1890 around the world. Exhibited Paris Salon, 1888.

He settled in New York City in 1880. In 1882 went with the Marquis of Lorne through Canada, preparing sketches for Picturesque Canada. And in 1905 became a member of the National Academy of Design.
