(Major scholarly study of Federal road surveys and costruc...)
Major scholarly study of Federal road surveys and costruction in the Trans-Mississippi West, 1846-1869. This author describes and assesses the role of the federal government in the location, survey, and improvement of routes for wagons in the trans-Mississippi West before the railroad era. He concludes the government was instrumental in sending out initial survey parties that combined exploration with scientific study, identifying potential routes, subsidizing freight and mail contracts, and programs for road improvement. He discusses 18 roads in detail that were constructed or improved by the Army or the Department of the Interior. With 20 maps throughout the text as well as a bibliography. Map on end-papers. 422 pages with index.

(This 422-page hardcover was published in 1952 by The Univ...)
This 422-page hardcover was published in 1952 by The University of California Press (1st edition). This is an ex-library edition, with the typical library marks and stamps. Otherwise, this book is in good condition, with clean, unmarked pages, with several folded corners. There is no dust cover, but the light brown hardcover looks nice with clear dark red lettering on the face and spine. Clear tape has been applied to the spine, due to a tear at the binding, but still holds well. Overall, a nice looking, solid and usable copy. see our 2 photos of this book.
