Educated private schools, Glennville, Alabama. Studied law, 1858-1859, in office of Watts, Judge & Jackson, Montgomery, Alabama. Admitted to bar, 1859 (age 20), and practiced until 1861.
Was opposed to secession, but went with his state. Went with 1st troops to Pensacola. Took part in capture navy yard and Fort Barancas.
Later Lieutenant Company G, 59th Alabama Regiment.
Saw hard service with Bragg’s army in Kentucky, at Chickamauga, Knoxville and last 12 months of war with Lee in Virginia Wrote letters to Montgomery Advertiser from army, and became identified with that paper after war. lieutenant was suppressed by Federal troops from April 20 until July 20, 1865.
Connected with the editorial department, since 1865. Becoming president Advertiser Company and editor-in-chief
