William Whetten Renwick

Renwick, William Whetten was born on October 30, 1864 in Lenox, Massachusetts, United States. Son of Edward Sabine and Alice (Brevoort) Renwick.

Education

Mechanical Engineering, Stevens Institute Technology, 1885. Studied architecture under uncle, James Renwick, New New York Sculpture, under Magnalier, of the École des Beaux Arts, Paris.

Painting in New York, Paris and Rome.

Career

Entered office of the late James Renwick, 1885, junior partner firm, 1890. Engaged on many well known buildings in New York, among them Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Saint Bartholomew’s Church, All Saints’ Church, Grace Church, et cetera Later practiced alone, devoting time exclusively to ecclesiastical architecture and decoration.

Architect of the Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Indianapolis.

Saint Aloysius’ Church, New New York All Saints’ Parish buildings.

The chantry, south porch and open air pulpit of Grace Church, Broadway and 10th Saint, New York, and many altars, monuments and decorations. Inventor of a kind of mural decoration known as “Fresco-Relief”.
