Chen William Y. graduated from the Anglo-Chinese College, Fuzhou. He studied at Syracuse University, U.S.A. where he obtained the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1918 and Master of Arts in 1919. Later he studied social psychology with William McDougall at Duke University and received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1930. Mr. Chen also attended Cambridge University, England, University of Paris and Berlin University participated in a series of lectures on China with Sir Frederick Whyte, Commander Stephen King-Hall and the Earl of Gosford for the British Broadcasting Corporation in London in 1929.
Chen William Y. served as social secretary in the Fuzhou Institutional Church and principal of Tsing Daik School. He was lecturer on Chinese history in Syracuse University. After his return From America, Mr. Chen served as teacher in the Foreign Language College in Fuzhou. He was a superintendent of the Fuzhou Institutional Church. Chen William Y. held the position of an adviser to Governor Sah Chen-ping of Fujian and to the salt commissioner of Fujian province.
Mr. Chen was appointed pastor of the Fuzhou Studenl Church. He also acted as a lecturer on religious education in Fujian Christian University and on comparative religion in Hwa Nan Women's College, Fuzhou. Chen William Y. returned to China in 1931 and was appointed associate professor of psychology, chairman of Arts Faculty and acting President of the Fujian Normal University.
