Davis, William Z. was born on June 10, 1839 in Loydsville, Ohio, United States. Son of Doctor Bushrod W. and Harriet (Hatcher) Davis.

Served 3 months’ enlistment, 4th Ohio regiment, 1861. Reënlisted in 96th O. Volumes, remaining in service until physically disabled and honorary discharged. Admitted to bar, 1862.
Practiced at Marion, O., 1864-1900. Elected judge of Supreme Court of Ohio, 1899, to succeed Honorary Joseph P. Bradbury, from February 9, 1900, but, Judge Bradbury having resigned, was appointed, January 10, 1900. Reëlected for term 1906-1912.
