Educated Western University and Washington and Jefferson College, Pennsylvania. Studied medicine with Doctor Joseph P. Gazzam, Pittsburgh, and attended lectures at Jefferson College, Philadelphia.
Practiced medicine in Virginia, Louisville and Washington. Early turned attention to historical and scientific studies. Extensively investigated American pre-historic archeology.
Associate bureau of Ethnology, Smithsonian Institution.
Consul to Yucatan. Recruited 77th Ohio regiment from border companies of Virginia and Ohio and commanded advance in Sherman’s division at Shiloh. Was active in Virginia supporting the Union, the restoration of the state government, and final separation to form the new commonwealth of West Virginia Home: Philadelphia.
