1952, 4 volumes)—the most widespread and comprehensive work on contemporary philosophy in the German-speaking world—shows Stegmiiller’s ability to interpret and clearly reconstruct philosophical positions, some of them by philosophers with widely different philosophical backgrounds like Brentano. Husserl, Scheler, Heidegger. Wittgenstein. Carnap. Putnam. Kripkc and Mackie. Stegmiiller’s extensive writings on the philosophy of science have had a great influence not only on philosophers but also on scientists. He is especially noted for promoting and thoroughly researching the so-called non-statement or structuralist view of scientific theories, originally put forward by J. D. Sneed. According to Sneed scientific theories are not sets of statements but mathematical structures with intended applications. Using the structuralist framework. Stegmiiller was continually trying to solve the problem of theoretical concepts and to close the gap between systematic and historical accounts of scientific progress.
