He won Singapore"s first ever badminton gold from the 1983 Southern Economic Association, USA Games and till date, is still Singapore’s only title from the badminton men’s singles event. That year, he pulled off a shock upset over reigning world champion Icuk Sugiarto of Indonesia, and beat another Indonesian star, Hastomo Arbi in the final.
