("NO AMERICA, NO JAZZ: As I grew up in New Orleans, I watc...)
"NO AMERICA, NO JAZZ: As I grew up in New Orleans, I watched my father give music workshops, even if it was for only five or 10 students. Early on he impressed upon me the importance of passing information along and trying to get to the essence of that information. And so we too want to pass on what's important about jazz, through this Teachers' Kit. Jazz is about modern life and having a dialogue, and I believe the more you know about the music, the more it can teach you about yourself. As teachers, we struggle every day with students who suffer from what I call a lack of mythology. What does it mean to be American? Does it mean rock and roll and McDonalds? We have struggled as a culture to develop a collective aesthetic, some way to pass on to future generations the meaning of how and why we live the way we do. Jazz music gives us a way to understand American life in the 20th century. Jazz is inclusive, dynamic, and resilient, just as modern life is. Because there is not one way of living but many, to be an American is no to be any one thing, but to be part of a process. My feeling is that one is always in the process of becoming an American. And much like our democracy, jazz music is always in the process of becoming whatever musicians make it. We're in the midst of a new movement. It's a movement that has come about from the increasing need to educate our students in a way that is not prejudiced and does not ignore the concerns of other people---an inclusive style of education. Teaching young people about the roots of jazz and helping them understand its soul honors this approach. When you come right down to it, jazz is optimistic music that is not native. That's why jazz is such a great thing for kids to study. This Teachers' Kit will help you pass along some of the important information about jazz to your students. I hope you all will soon be swingin'!" from booklet kit by (signed) Wynton Marsalis

( Wynton Marsalis's captivating text and Frank Stewart's ...)
Wynton Marsalis's captivating text and Frank Stewart's stunning black-and-white photographs give us a year in the life of today's premier jazz musician and composer, in a book that is itself structured like a jazz blues. Featuring jive-talking cat daddies in the Second Line, gorgeous and mysterious women in the Sweet Refrain, exotic vistas in the Bridge, and musicians, like the J-Master on piano, who live the music the way they play it. By turns lyrical, down-to-earth, exalted, and profane, here are a thrilling evocation of the experience of group improvisation, a provocative take on rap, and distinctive views on the road, romance, creativity, politics, culture, tradition and innovation, and the role of the artist in American society. The result is a fascinating self-portrait, and the next best thing to being there for every fan who has ever dreamed of traveling with the band. The most popular and acclaimed jazz musician of his generation, Wynton Marsalis is also a distinguished classical performer, the first artist to win Grammy awards for both jazz and classical recordings. The founder of Lincoln Center's Classical Jazz Series, Marsalis is artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center Frank Stewart is a prize-winning photographer and filmmaker.
