Although he never announced an original philosophy of his own Léon was nevertheless a key figure in the development of French philosophy for several decades. In 1893 he founded the Revue de Métaphysique et de Morale in reaction against the positivism of the Revue philosophique of Théodule Ribot. This not only fostered the collaboration of philosophers and scientists but also occasioned the revival of Kantian criticism and the birth of the philosophy of values W France. In 1900, Léon organized the first of many ol the Congrès Internationaux de Philosophie m Paris. The Congres was effective in promoting the spread of ideas and communication and cooperation among philosophers worldwide. It also inspired and made possible the redaction of André Lalande s celebrated Vocabulaire technique et critique de Ia philosophie. In 1901 Léon founded the Société Française de Philosophie, whose sessions were often devoted to the discussion of theories proposed by scientist such as Albert Einstein and Le Dantec. This, too, helped to forge close links between science and philosophy, which had been separated for many years. Through his important studies of JFichte Léon renewed interest in the latter’s philosophy, arguing that a great mistake was committed in representing him as sharing in the idea that the mission ol Germany was to dominate other nations by forceLike Lalande, Léon was a philosopher who subordinated the claims of his own individuality to an ideal of collective enlightenment.
