Xenia Hausner
Xenia Hausner was born in 1951 in Vienna, Austria. She is a daughter of an artist Rudolf Hausner.
Xenia Hausner studied stage design at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1972 to 1976. She also attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
Xenia Hausner started her career at the end of the 1970s. In 1976, she became a scenic designer at the Burgtheater in Vienna. Since then, Hausner has decorated more than one hundred theatrical, opera, and movie productions at such venues as the Shiller Theater, Berlin, the Thalia Theater, Hamburg, the Vienna State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, the Covent Garden Opera, London, and the Theatre de la Monnaie, Brussels. She used find materials from condemned houses, car and garbage dumps to build her first decorations.
In 1981, the artist relocated to Berlin where she established a studio. Since 1992, Hausner changed the circle of action and devoted all her time to painting. In addition to her own canvases, she has also created a number of works merging large-scale photos with a variety of materials the choice of which depended on the medium she worked with. Hauser has also used hand-made paper as the canvas for her paintings.
Apart from set decorating, Hausner has applied her design experience in several architectural projects, like the mantling of the Ringturm in Vienna or windows design in churches.
Xenia Hausner has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her first solo show in New York City was organized in 2000. Her works have also been brought to the United Kingdom, China, Italy, the Russian Federation and elsewhere.
Nowadays, Hausner shares her time between Berlin and Vienna.
