Bachelor of Science, U. Aero. Engineering, Shenyang, 1986; Master of Science, Chinese Academy Sciences, Beijing, 1989; Doctor of Philosophy, Oxford (England) University, 1996.
He has given invited keynote talks at SEA2011, SCET2012, BIOMA2012 and Mendel Conference on Soft Computing (Mendel 2012). He created the firefly algorithm (2008), cuckoo search (2009), bat algorithm (2010), and flower pollination algorithm. These algorithms have become important tools in artificial intelligence, machine learning, neural computing and engineering applications.
Since 2009, more than 1,000 peer-reviewed research papers cited the firefly algorithm and/or cuckoo search.
In addition, the so-called Van Flandern–Yang hypothesis was derived from his collaboration with Tom Van Flandern to explain the gravity variations during the 1997 solar eclipse, and this theory is related to the well-known Allais effect and other phenomena.
