Yagi Ryuichiro graduated from Hakodate Commercial School (1924).
After graduating Yagi Ryuichiro went to Tokyo and joined Literature Section of Sayoku Gekijo (Left-Wing Theater) (1930). Later became affiliated with Shin-Tsukiji Gekidan (New Tsukiji Theatrical Troupe). He had his drama Kuma-no-Uta (The Song of a Bear) staged by Masao Inoue and others (1936) and thenceforth became writer of middle dramas.
Among plays he produced after the war Mizuumi-no-Musume (The Maiden of the Lake), Kokyo-no-Koe (The Call of the Homeland) and Haru, Aki (Spring, Autumn), all of which contain much stage technique and are representative of large theater dramas. In writing his plays he never allowed himself to be carried away by sentimentality but at the same time never fails to put proper amount of pathos Into his works.
