Background
Yahe Hamada was born about 1630.
Yahe Hamada was born about 1630.
He traded with South Sea islands, sailing there aboard ships of Heizo Suetsugu, Shogunate magistrate in Nagasaki. When he called at a Formosan port in 1628, trouble arose in connection with trade between Japan and Holland. Enraged at the attitude of Pieter Nuyts, the Dutch governor of Formosa, he intimidated him and took back with him five Dutchmen as hostages. Yahc reported the matter to Magistrate Suetsugu, who put the five men into prison. The Shogunate stiffened its policy toward Holland and threatened to prohibit trade with that country. The trouble, however, was settled through Jacques Specx, the new governor of Formosa, handing over Nuyts to Japan. Nuyts was permitted to return to Batavia after some years. Nothing is known about Yahe's career after this incident.
