Educated at Omdurman, then at Gordon Memorial College, where he obtained a diploma in civil engineering in 1950. He completed his studies in London at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, Saining a diploma in hydrology.
After working with British companies on irrigation schemes he Joined the Ministry of Irrigation. He continued his research, writing articles For learned journals on hydrology and lecturing at Khartoum University. From 1963 to 1965 he was secretary of the Sudanese Engineers’ Society.
His rapid climb in government service look him to Under-Secretary in the Ministry of Irrigation on September 2, 1969. Two years later he was in the cabinet in charge of irrigation and electric power.
One of the new generation of technocrats introduced into government for his technical skill rather than his political expertise. A civil engineer with the right blend of up-to-date academic knowledge and the practical experience of working on projects either with British companies or the government. A genuine enthusiast on all irrigation problems.
