In youth messenger boy in shops and offices. 1917-1918 worked for AllRussian Extraordinary Commission Against Counterrevolution, Sabotage and Speculation. 1918-1921 in Red Army.
From 1921 worked for All-Russian Extraordinary Commission Against Counterrevolution, Sabotage and Speculation, State Polit Board and Joint State Political Administration (Foreign Department). 4 July 1918 attempted to assassinate German ambassador to Moscow Mirbach on orders from Leftist Socialist-Revol Party Central Committee in order to wreck Brcst-Litovsk Peace Treaty. Was wounded but escaped.
After Leftist Socialist-Revol revolt was crushed he gave himself up to Soviet authorities, publicly renounced struggle against Soviet regime, was pardoned and sent to the front. 1929 secretly visited Trotsky who had been exiled abroad. After returning to the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics betrayed by Radek.
Arrested as a Trotsky agent.
