Yakov Karlovich Grot was born into a noble family of collegiate councillor with roots in Germany.
He graduated from Tsarskoe Selo Lyceum in 1832 with a gold medal.
Since 1841, Grot worked as a teacher in various educational institutions. Starting in 1862, his main focus was devoted to science and publishing. Grot had officially ascended to the chairman of Russian language and Literature department of Academy of Sciences, even though he, in fact, had this position since 1866. In 1889, he became the vice-president of Academy of Sciences.
