Yakov Nikolayevich graduated from the High artillery command school (1924), party, and political training courses at the Lenin Academy (1930) and the Frunze Military Academy (1934).
In 1915, during World War I, Yakov Nikolayevich was drafted into the Russian Navy. He also participated in the October Revolution. He joined the Red Army in 1918.
On June 4, 1940, Yakov Nikolayevich became the Lieutenant-General of the Tank Troops. On January 1, 1940, he became a Colonel-General of the Tank Troops. On February 21, 1944, Yakov Nikolayevich became Marshal of the Tank Troops.
