Education
It is said that soon after birth he was abandoned on the streets of Kamakura. He was picked up and under the guidance of Dōryū Rankei was made a priest at the Kenchōji Temple, where he attended on his benefaction.
Career
Later went to China, which was then under the Sung Dynasty's reign and stayed there eight years during which time he came into contact with many Chinese priests and scholars.
Upon return (1296) was appointed chief priest of Kenchōji Temple, and after founding the Chōshōji Temple, served as chief priest in turn at Tōshōji, Kōmyōji and Zenkōji temples, to eventually become chief priest of Kenninji Temple (1306), where priests from all over the country thronged for religious discourse. It is said he often offered religious guidance to Emperor Gouda.
